Shawna Oliver’s path into healthcare wasn’t a traditional one—but it’s a journey defined by passion, purpose, and personal growth. After a successful career in business and co-owning a retail home and gift store, Shawna made a bold transition at 40 years old, stepping into the healthcare field as a care aide. It was during this time that she discovered a deep connection to the work being done by the recreation department.

Receiving the FSJ Hospital Foundation Education Grant marked a pivotal moment in Shawna’s career. “It filled me with gratitude and excitement,” she shared. The grant enabled her to pursue additional training that has enriched her ability to serve residents with empathy and insight. Shawna is a firm believer in lifelong learning, and her continued education has helped her better understand the individuals she cares for—not just as patients, but as whole people with unique stories and wisdom.

Her daily motivation comes from a desire to create meaningful moments and a sense of purpose for residents. As a recreation assistant, Shawna plays a vital role in supporting emotional and social well-being, often forming close bonds that allow her to respond with compassion and tailored care.

Thanks to the FSJ Hospital Foundation Educational Grant, Shawna feels better equipped to support both her colleagues and the residents she serves. “Your investment in education is more than financial—it’s a gesture of belief in our capacity to make a difference,” she said. With renewed dedication, Shawna continues to bring joy, connection, and person-centered care to the heart of Fort St. John’s healthcare community.
