Lunar Pro Densitometer
The Lunar Pro Densitometer is a specialized bone density scanner that boast a extended life span, ensuring our community has access to bone density scanning now and for many years from now. Bone density scanning allows us to predict fracture risk and help us prevent future injuries for people in our community by allowing physicians to choose the appropriate treatment plan and/or preventative measures for each patient. According to Osteoporosis Canada, 1 in 3 women and 1 in 5 men will suffer from an osteoporotic fracture in their lifetime. In 2023 426 patients were scanned at our hospital, it is expected that this number will increase to 500 in 2024.
Maldi Machine
The lab at FSJ Hospital is the only microbiology lab in the Northeast healthcare region and processes approximately 18,500 samples each year. The primary benefit of the Maldi is the rapid identification of bacteria and yeast. It also possesses the ability to identify a greater range of pathogens than current methods. By being able to identify more pathogens, less specimens will have to be sent to referral laboratories, reducing the costs and turnaround times. This allows the clinician to render faster a diagnosis and tailor antibiotic treatment for maximum benefit, which will reduce the length of hospital stays and increase patient care.
