Braving the cold winter temperatures, the Moose FM crew and the FSJ Hospital Foundation team hosted the 21st annual Light A Moose Radiothon, which took place from November 20 -22. The goal was to raise $150,000 to support the purchase of the MALDI Biotyper for the Microbiology Lab here in the FSJ Hospital.

The MALDI (Matrix Assisted Laser Desorption Ionization) Biotyper is a versatile MALDI TOF MS system that allows for the rapid identification of yeast and bacteria. Additionally, it can identify a broader range of pathogens than current methods. This capability enables clinicians to make faster diagnoses and tailor antibiotic treatments, ultimately reducing hospital stays and enhancing patient care. The MALDI Biotyper will benefit patients across all demographics, from neonates to cancer care to surgical patients, inpatients, and outpatients. It has enhanced capabilities and can analyze up to 600 samples per hour. This gold standard piece of equipment will significantly expand the Microbiology lab’s capacity to meet the needs of the community now and into the future.

The fundraising event saw an impressive turnout of 148 donors, raising a total of $150,250.  NorthRiver Midstream, Mustang Rentals, and PETRONAS Canada generously matched donations, each contributing $20,000.
