Megan Wilson has always felt a deep connection to her hometown of Fort St. John, and now she’s bringing that dedication full circle as she begins her career as a primary care nurse at the Fort St. John Hospital. Aided by a scholarship from the FSJ Hospital Foundation, she was able to focus on her studies and complete her accelerated program. With determination, resilience, and a passion for serving northern communities, Megan’s journey from student to professional is an inspiring testament to the power of hard work and perseverance.

Megan was encouraged by her interest in healthcare and her desire to help others, she completed a Health Studies degree at Northern Lights College before transitioning into the nursing program at the University of Northern British Columbia.

“I had heard that nursing might be a good fit for me, but I didn’t fully realize how many different paths there were” Megan shares. “Once I researched the program and understood the scope of what nurses do, I knew it was something I’d love.”

During her studies, Megan’s favourite experience was her clinical rotations, where she got hands-on exposure to different specialties in healthcare. “It was amazing to see nurses in action and understand the depth of what they do. It’s one thing to learn from a textbook, but it’s another to be there, helping people firsthand.”

The accelerated nursing program was no small feat—demanding coursework and intensive clinical training meant Megan had to put much of her life on hold to fully commit to her studies. “It was a challenge, but it taught me the importance of maintaining work-life balance and managing stress,” she says. “That’s a skill that will serve me well throughout my career, especially since burnout is a common concern in nursing.”

Looking ahead, Megan hopes to continue advancing her education and pursue a career as a nurse practitioner. “I love school, and I don’t think I’m done learning yet. I’d love to continue working in northern, underserved areas and help bring essential care to communities that need it most.”

Her advice to future nursing students? “Even when you feel comfortable, there will always be new challenges. Be kind to yourself, keep pushing forward, and trust that you’re doing your best.”

As Megan takes her next steps in her career in Fort St. John, she embodies the spirit of local healthcare—strong, compassionate, and ready to make a difference.
